Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Management

Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep leg vein, causing pain and swelling and carrying a risk of the clot travelling to the lungs. Dr. Md. Nagib Mahfuz Khan provides prompt diagnosis and management of DVT to prevent serious complications.

Symptoms

  • Swelling in one leg, often sudden
  • Pain or tenderness, usually starting in the calf
  • Warmth and redness over the affected area
  • Heaviness or tightness in the leg
  • Sudden breathlessness or chest pain (may signal clot spread to the lungs)

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is confirmed with a venous Doppler / duplex ultrasound of the leg, supported by blood tests such as D-dimer where appropriate, to assess the extent and location of the clot.

Treatment Options

  • Blood-thinning (anticoagulant) medication to stop clot growth
  • Compression stockings to reduce swelling and discomfort
  • Catheter-based clot removal or thrombolysis in selected severe cases
  • IVC filter placement when anticoagulation is not suitable

DVT needs urgent evaluation — timely treatment reduces the risk of the clot travelling to the lungs (pulmonary embolism). Seek prompt consultation if you notice sudden leg swelling or pain.

Who Should Consult

  • Sudden one-sided leg swelling or pain
  • Recent surgery, prolonged immobility, or long travel with new leg symptoms
  • A personal or family history of clotting disorders
  • Breathlessness or chest pain alongside leg swelling (seek urgent care)
